
State Leave Laws Are Moving Fast: Your Q1 2026 Compliance Update
If you’re a multi-state employer, your compliance calendar just got a lot more crowded.
2026 is shaping up to be one of the busiest years yet for state employee leave laws, with brand-new paid family & medical leave programs launching in Delaware and Minnesota, significant redesigns to Washington’s existing program, and a wave of expansions across California, Colorado, Connecticut, Oregon, and Rhode Island. And that’s just what’s already in effect.
More changes are coming this summer in Illinois, Maine, and New Jersey, including new NICU leave requirements, reduced eligibility thresholds, and job protection expansions that could catch employers off guard if they’re not prepared.
The pattern is clear: states are moving faster, being more generous, and covering more employers than ever before. If your leave policies haven’t been updated since last year, they’re likely already out of compliance somewhere.
